March 2025

Kuna families

I hope you enjoy this Spring Break!

If the vacation seems early this year -- it is.

This year, it's in the third week of March instead of the last week.

We made this change so that our district's Spring Break matches up with other districts in the area. This decision was based on feedback from families and staff.

We are excited for students and staff to return Monday, March 24 and for all the celebratory spring activities including the graduation ceremonies for Initial Point and Kuna High schools.

Just before break, the KHS top soon-to-be graduates were announced. Congratulations to Valedictorians: Xander D. Shearer, Lilah Murray, Vienna Phillips, and Ryker Hardin and to Salutatorians: Elijah Hogan, Tyler N. Trapp, Belle Rose Sherman, Emma Bullis, Zachary Ryan Richards, and Alexa Peterson.

Much work is under way in the district. Here are some updates (scroll down for more details):

  • Upcoming Parent Universities focus on transition years
  • New cell phone policy nears completion, feedback sought on third reading
  • Critical maintenance projects moving forward; elementary attendance zones to be reviewed
  • Consider joining our Capital Plan Committee
  • Calendar Committee begins work
  • Now enrolling for kindergarten 2025-26; Open house April 16
  • Looking ahead in our schools
  • District/School Board Newsletters

Upcoming Parent Universities focus on transition years

This year, we’ve been happy to offer Parent University events to share helpful information with parents. Earlier, we hosted one on special education.

Now, we’re planning events for the important transition years, like starting kindergarten, middle school, high school, and senior year. These events will answer questions parents have about these big changes. Look out for more information soon! A big thank you to the Superintendent Advisory Council for suggesting these events.

New cell phone policy nears completion, feedback sought on third reading

We appreciate all the feedback received as the district shapes its first policy governing student cell phone policy.

The draft policy has advanced to the third reading and if approved by the Board, it would be finalized for the 2025-26 school year.

The latest draft of “518 Student Use of Personal Communication Devices” is posted on our Policies Under Review website.

Comments are due April 7 to Assistant Superintendent Brian Graves at bgraves@kunaschools.org

Critical maintenance projects moving forward; elementary attendance zones to be reviewed

During this month’s school board meeting, we updated trustees about a number of projects that are planned to start this summer including fire alarms and heating/air conditioning systems at Indian Creek, Ross and Kuna High schools (KHS will be a two-year project.)

Work already is under way on the fire alarm system at Hubbard and the roof on the annex that was closed this year. When the annex reopens next fall, it will add classrooms that can serve an additional 125 K-3 students and allow for a new extended resource room to be added for students eligible for special education services. This means elementary attendance will need to be adjusted and we will have more information on this for families.

These projects are possible thanks to new state facilities funding earmarked for repairs.

You can read more about the projects in the March Board Report.

Consider joining our Capital Plan Committee

We appreciate the new facilities funds the state is provided to help with critical repairs in our schools. The funds aren’t enough to pay for new schools or large expansions of our existing schools.

A Capital Plan Task Force is reviewing our facility needs to help identify what additional learning space our students may need in the near future. Please reach out to Assistant Superintendent Jason Reddy at jjreddy@kunaschools.org if you are interested in participating.

The group will meet at Swan Falls High School at 6 p.m.:

  • Monday, April 7
  • Monday, May 12
  • Monday, June 9
  • Monday, Aug. 11

Calendar Committee begins work

The 2025-2026 school year calendar has been finalized and is available on our website. We are currently working on the calendars for the 2026-2027 and 2027-2028 school years.
We are grateful to the committee that develops these calendar recommendations for the school board's consideration. The committee members are:
  • Parents: Amanda Sheppard, Mary Stewart, and Suzanne Ronge
  • Teachers: Christy Mauk, Erin Laughlin, Sherrie Feist, Kat Campbell, and Toni Burbank
  • Administrators: Kimberly Barker, Jessica Griswold, Luke Wolf, Tim Jensen, and Robbie Reno
  • School Board Member: Kyrsti Bruce
Their dedication ensures that our school calendars meet the needs of our students, families, and staff.
