To ensure a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors, we ask all parents and guardians to review Idaho’s e-bike and motorized vehicle laws with their students before allowing them to ride to school.

Many electric motorcycles and high-powered "e-bikes" sold today do not meet Idaho’s legal definition of an electric-assisted bicycle.

Students may only ride or bring vehicles to school that comply with Idaho law and school campus policies. Vehicles that exceed legal e-bike limits are classified as motor vehicles and are strictly prohibited on campus grounds.

What Is a Legal E-Bike?

Under Idaho law, an electric-assisted bicycle (e-bike) is defined as a bicycle equipped with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Legal e-bikes fall into three standard classes and are treated the same as traditional, human-powered bicycles on campus and public roadways.

Allowed Campus E-Bike Classes

• Class 1 E-Bike: Pedal-assist only (motor assists only while pedaling) up to 20 mph. Must have operable pedals.
• Class 2 E-Bike: Throttle-assisted up to 20 mph]. Operable pedals are required.
• Class 3 E-Bike: Pedal-assist only (motor assists only while pedaling) up to 28 mph Must have operable pedals

Compliant model examples include standard commuter e-bikes from brands like Velotric or Aniioki (provided motor power remains under 750W).

Prohibited Vehicles on Campus

Vehicles that exceed 750 watts or speed limits of 28 mph are legally categorized as mopeds or electric motorcycles[cite: 1]. These vehicles are not permitted on school property or bike racks.

1. Mopeds

• Specs: 49cc gas engine or electric motor between 750W – 4,000W with speeds exceeding 28 mph. Often feature a step-through frame
• Legal Status: Classified as motor vehicles. Requires a driver’s license, motor vehicle registration, required safety equipment, and insurance.

2. E-Motorcycles & High-Powered Off-Road Vehicles

• Specs: Motors above 750W with twist throttles, footpegs (instead of pedals), and high-powered off-road frames (e.g., brands/models like Vifor or Sur-Ron style e-dirt bikes).
• Legal Status: Classified as motor vehicles or off-highway vehicles (OHV). Requires a driver’s license, vehicle registration, insurance, street equipment, and an off-road OHV sticker.
